SMU's Intelligent Data Analysis Group (http://lyle.smu.edu/IDA/) located at the Computer Science Department, Lyle School of Engineering, invites applications for two PhD positions in the field of machine learning, data mining and data visualization. The successful candidates will participate in the group's research activities centered around data stream mining, genetic sequence mining and hurricane forecasting (research not limited to these topics) and will participate in related NSF-funded projects.
Candidates should have a MS in computer science (or equivalent training) and outstanding skills in at least one of the following areas: machine learning/data mining, mathematics/statistics, bioinformatics. A strong academic record, excellent analytical skills and a clear aptitude for autonomous, creative research will be priority selection criteria. Good programming skills and fluency in English are required.
The expected start date is August 2010. Qualified applicants will be offered support in form of a teaching or research assistantship.
Applicants should send their curriculum vitae and academic transcript, a statement of motivation and research interests, and names and addresses (with e-mail and telephone number) of at least 3 references to the address below by electronic mail.
